The Metronome Friend or Foe
The Metronome Friend or Foe
It’s time we talk about it. I know you don’t want to hear it, but here goes: the metronome is your friend! (Well, maybe it wasn’t the most exciting gift for my 7th birthday – but I still have it!) For those of you who remember practicing piano to the ‘tick-tock-tick-tock’ of the metronome, it may strike fear into your hearts. But it shouldn’t, because it ends up the metronome is one of the most valuable tools you have in your `ukulele arsenal!
If you’re unfamiliar with the metronome, let me explain. Basically, it’s a timekeeper – and a strict one! It’s also a bit of an eye-opener. And no matter how many times we say “that thing slowed down”, or “that darn thing keeps speeding up”, the truth is, it’s us! Practicing regularly with a metronome not only helps improve our timing, it also helps set our fingers’ muscle memory. (Remember muscle memory?)
So, although we may have a love/hate relationship with it, the metronome can help us all to be better players. Regardless of whether you use your old key-wound mechanical one from your 7th birthday (okay, okay – get over it, Kate!), a handy digital kind that both ‘ticks’ and flashes a light, or one of the many free apps available, it’s time to make it a part of our regular practice!
